Hawthorne

History of Hawthorne

Hawthorne's first known residents were Shoshone Native Americans. In 1769 the Spanish took over and the land was used for grazing cattle. Mexico named the area Sausal Redondo, a huge track running from present day Playa del Rey to Torrance inland to Inglewood.

California became a United States territory in 1848 and a state in 1850. In 1860 Scottish Lord Sir Robert Burnett purchased Sausal Redondo and expanded the livestock operations. He planted thousands of eucalyptus, pepper, and fruit trees. In 1873 he returned to Scotland and leased the land to Daniel Freeman, a Canadian who continued to expand the orchards, sheep and cattle herds. A drought devastated the crop so Freeman started to grow barley which used less water. By 1880 he was producing a million bushels a year. Freeman exercised his purchase option to buy the land in 1885.

Spurred by the construction of a narrow gage railroad, an investment group called the Hawthorne Land Company bought acreage to start a town in the midst of the barley fields. Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Anderson were the first settlers. They began house construction in 1906 at 515 Freeman Avenue. Their son, Glenn, later served as Hawthorne’s mayor. By 1907 Hawthorne had grown to more than 100 homes.

Hawthorne was incorporated as a city in July 1922. By 1930 there were 6,595 residents. In 1939 Northrop Aircraft Inc moved to Hawthorne followed by subcontractors eager to capitalize on the wartime growth in aviation.
