History of Canoga Park
Canoga Park was the home of Native Americans that lived along the tributaries of the Los Angeles River and traded with the north Valley people. It's estimated that the Native American people had civilizations along the Valley for more than 8,000 years. The Conoga Park area was also part of the Mission San Fernando Rey de Expana during the late 1700s and early 1800s.
During the 1860s the southern half of the San Fernando Valley was purchased by Isaac Landershim and Isaac Van Nuys and wheat ranches were established in the area. This was the first area to ship wheat to Europe from California. The westernmost ranch which spanned 13,000 acres is where the future Conoga Park area is now located. It was here that various Euclayptus trees were imported and planted which later spread to other Canoga Park ranches and farms.
Canoga Park was once named Owensmouth as the area was exaggerated as being the new mouth of the Owens River but later became known as Canoga Park. Founded in 1912, properties in Canoga Park were contracted for sale and a pre development scheme would bring Pacific Electric streetcars into the area as well as a highway and many new thoroughfares. For many years the area remained a small community that marketed itself with the “baby” motif in every way it could including using storks in their advertisements. The Canoga Park area was known as the baby city of the San Fernando Valley.
