Lake View Terrace

History of Lake View Terrace

Lake View Terrace was originally a part of the Rancho Tijunga Mexican land grant. Early settlers sold firewood to the residents of El Pueblo which was an early settlement that is located in what is now known as Los Angeles. Homer and Marie Hansen established the Lake View Terrace area s a horse ranch in the early 1800s and the area remained a horse ranch for the entire century.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers used eminent domain to seize the horse ranch in 1939 and built a dam to prevent flooding in the northeast and southeast portions of the San Fernando Valley. By 1940 the Hansen Dam was complete. A lake once stood directly behind the dam and was a prime vacation area during the 1950s but over the years the lake has dried up but legend has it that the neighborhood of Lake View Terrace gained its name from the lake that was once there.
